IS AN ELECTRICAL SERVICE UPGRADE RIGHT FOR YOU?
There are a number of reasons homeowners would consider having electrical service upgrades. The two biggest reasons are resolving safety issues or providing more power to your home.
For safety issues, this is generally something you’ll look into if you’re in an older home. For example, maybe you have some old electrical work that’s now out of code, or perhaps some of your electrical was damaged in a storm. You may even have safety concerns by having an electrical panel that has been recalled due to known fire hazards associated with that electrical panel. Or maybe you’re looking to remodel a room or part of your home and the existing panel is full.
And then when we’re talking about adding more power to your home, this is something you’ll get with both old and new homes. Examples of this are adding a hot tub, adding an electric vehicle charging station in your garage, or a number of other high-power gadgets that might suck a lot of power. Most home builders aren’t putting that kind of power in your house standard, so you’ll have to work with an electrician to upgrade your service and bring more amperage into the home.

HOW TO DECIDE IF YOUR HOME NEEDS A SERVICE UPGRADE.
Typically, older homes have a 100 amp service, but a lot of newer homes have 200 amp service. And if your home is larger, you may even have a 400 amp service. If you’re wanting to upgrade your electrical for most of the items mentioned above, you may need to upgrade to a larger 200 amp or 400 amp service.
Then the service needs to be brought up to current electrical code, stand hundreds.
OVERHEAD LATERAL
If your power is coming above ground, the first thing you need to do is upgrade your homes power system so it’s ready for the larger power amount. Then the power company will simply run a larger wire from the utility pole to your home.
UNDERGROUND SERVICE
If your power is coming from an underground source, it’s up to the homeowner to have a trench dug from the transformer pad to the home, including conduit. Then the utility company will pull new wire through that conduit that you’ve buried in your backyard to provide larger power service to your home.
HOW DOES THE SERVICE UPGRADE PROCESS WORK?
Electrical service is normally brought to the home in two different ways. The first is overhead lines that string across the yard. This is called an overhead lateral. The second way power gets to your home is underground. If a permit needs to be obtained from the city in order to perform the work, the homeowner is responsible for getting that first, and only after it’s obtained can the electrical company and utility company begin work.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT TO CONSIDER
Upgrading the electrical in your home may not just be upgrading to more amps. Sometimes it will require an entirely new electrical system. For example, starting in 2023, code requirements will also require you to install whole-house search protection. So even though your current electrical system was done just a few years ago, it may not have a whole house electrical search protection, and that would need to be fixed before you could upgrade your service.
So, if you’re looking to have an electrical service upgrade and have questions, it’s always best to contact a professional. No matter how old your house is, they can come out and let you know what the situation is, so you know what to expect when you pull the trigger. And it’s always just a smart idea to have your electrical system evaluated and looked at on a regular basis by a professional electrician anyway!
